About Us

Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses of Austin (PAPNA) seeks to advance mental health in the Austin Area by providing peer and professional support to Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (PMH-APRNs).  We are working to raise awareness about psychiatric nursing and promote the profession. Our primary goals include promoting excellence in practice, and advancing the role of the Texas PMH-APRNs through practice, education and community leadership.

American Medical Association Proposes Joint Nursing Practice Regulation

The American Medical Association’s (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD) recently passed a policy amendment that recommends advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) roles “be licensed and regulated jointly by the state medical and nursing boards.” The American Nurses Association (ANA) has refuted this recommendation stating that it is not in the best interest of patients or the nursing profession.

Introduction of Federal Legislation Regarding APRN’s

The ICAN Act is proposed legislation that aims to remove administrative and practice barriers under Medicare and Medicaid by authorizing advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to perform duties currently reserved for physicians only. The act would allow APRNs to order and supervise cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, order diabetic shoes, refer patients for medical nutrition therapy, certify and recertify a patient’s terminal illness for hospice eligibility, and perform all mandatory examinations in skilled nursing facilities. The act has been endorsed by more than 160 health care organizations in the 117th Congress.

Texas Full Practice Authority for APRN’s

The TNP website lists groups who want to see full practice authority for APRN’s. These include AARP, Amazon and some heath insurance companies. It has been noted that states with the highest level of access to healthcare are states that permit full practice authority for APRN’s. Statements made at the Texas Democratic and Republican Conventions indicated that Texas politicians are not against full practice authority. There is a tab on the TNP website “TNP Connect” where APRN’s can apply to be legislative ambassadors. These ambassadors are assigned to interact with specific legislators.
